Haiti Action Committee is honored to share this video from Fanmi Lavalas, the people’s party of Haiti, commemorating Haiti’s first democratic election on December 16th, 1990, that brought President Jean-Bertrand Aristide into office. Here is our translation from Kreyol of the audio portion of the video. Please feel free to share widely.

December 16, 1990 – December 16, 2025

Respect for you, President Aristide. In the collective memory of the Haitian people, December 16 is a date that marks the struggle for dignity and social justice, resounding with the torch-bearing voice of the national majority. It was the day that hope was reborn, thanks to the engagement of a generation who stood up to change its destiny. The names of the many women and men who fought this struggle, among them Dr. Jean-Bertrand Aristide, remain engraved in history as a symbol of dignity, courage and resistance of a people who have never given up on their dreams.

On the Occasion of this December 16th

Respect for all the people who carried the torch of this struggle. Respect for our history. Respect for our sacrifices. A Lavalas of love and solidarity for the people. Despite the violence, misery and injustice that the GNB-ist coup makers have unleashed on our lives today, the Haitian people continue to hold up hope. The sun that rose in the year 1990 will rise again. It will bring the light of dignity and hope, because the Lavalas coffee is pure; it is not filtered with the dregs of treason.

*Note: The GNB was a group organized by the Haitian elite to attack the democratically elected government of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide and pave the way for the 2004 US-orchestrated coup.
