Go to the website at haitiemergencyrelief.org to contribute and look for the orange donate button. HERF is sponsored by the non-profit East Bay Sanctuary Covenant. Your tax deductible contribution can be an important step in making this hospital a reality. The story of UniFA is one of Haitians serving Haitians. UniFA is a fully accredited Haitian University, with Schools of Medicine, Engineering, Nursing, Physical Therapy, Dentistry, Law, Continuing Education, Agronomy and Economics. Founded by Haiti’s first democratically elected president, former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide and staffed by Haitian faculty. UniFA now has ove 2,200 students studying on its campus in Tabarre.
Most of these students – more than half of them women – come from sectors that have traditionally been excluded from access to higher education. Since re-opening in 2011, UniFA has graduated 230 new doctors, 78 new nurses, 8 physical therapists and 30 lawyers, providing young people with the skills and knowledge to lead their country forward.
Now UniFA is launching its most ambitious project to date. It is constructing a new medical center and teaching hospital that will provide UniFA’s students in the medical sciences with practical experience and at the same time provide urgent medical care to those in the region who are unable to access health care. This new hospital will be a vital institution in a country in which the vast majority of people have little or no access to medical care.
Construction of the new hospital is already underway. It will be housed in a three-story building on the UniFA campus in Tabarre. It will have 50 beds, an emergency room, and an on-site laboratory and pharmacy. Patients will receive care in the following specialized outpatient clinicsL OB/GYN, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Orthopedic Surgery, Urology, Ophthalmology, Neurology [the first Neurology Department in all of Haiti].
