In the last twenty minutes of this KPFA Flashpoints segment with Dennis Bernstein, Robert Roth of Haiti Action Committee speaks about the current situation in Haiti. He addresses the long white supremacist history of US administrations of both parties that have targeted Haitian refugees for deportation; the recent Trump plan to revive Guantanamo to intern refugees, echoing similar US policies in the 90’s that interned tens of thousands of Haitians fleeing a deadly military junta at Guantanamo; the current situation in Haiti following two decades of US occupation and multiple illegitimate US-backed Haitian governments spawning death squad violence against the people – understood in Haiti as a slow genocide. US and foreign allies are determined not to allow Haitians self-determination. This year is also the 200th anniversary of France’s gunboat diplomacy that forced Haitians to pay $21 billion reparations to compensate colonial slave-owners for their losses.
