Haiti Action Committee is honored to publish this statement from Oganizasyon Fanm nan Sid (Organization of the Women of the South). It commemorates the first democratic election in Haiti’s history on December 16, 1990, which brought Jean-Bertrand Aristide and the Fanmi Lavalas Political Organization to power, bringing hope and progressive change for the people of Haiti, only to have the new government overthrown by a US-orchestrated coup on September 30, 1991. We hope you will read this statement and share it widely.

This December 16 commemorated the anniversary of the election of Fanmi Lavalas Political Organization in 1990.

We, the women of Oganizasyon Fanm nan Sid (Organization of the Women of the South), honor the courage of our brothers and sisters who the death squad gangs/legal bandits have kidnapped, tortured, raped, killed, and forced out of their homes everywhere in the country.

We express our condolences to the families of the victims. We join with them to form a chain of solidarity in the struggle against massacres and all acts of violence against the Haitian people, particularly in the departments of the West and the Artibonite.

We denounce the members of the CORE GROUP, such as the US, Canada and France, who organized the 2004 kidnapping/coup d’etat that overthrew President Aristide. Just as they are doing today, they provided Guy Philippe with weapons in 2003 to terrorize the population and have now been occupying the country for the past 20 years.

On December 16, 1990, the Haitian people voted overwhelmingly for Father Jean-Bertrand Aristide as president. The vote of the people was honored, and within a short period of time the Haitian people had found peace of mind and peace in the stomach.

This December 16, 2024, Oganizasyon Fanm nan Sid and Oganizasyon Fanm Vanyan Solon (Organization of Militant Women of Solon) join together to say happy anniversary to Fanmi Lavalas because it is the pride of the Haitian people.  Alone we are weak, together we are strong, all together we are Lavalas.
