Haiti Action Committee is honored to share this press statement from Fanmi Lavalas Political Organization, the people’s party of Haiti. The statement highlights the demands of Haitians for security in the face of escalating death squad terror and for an end to government corruption. It was issued to commemorate the 221st anniversary of the Battle of Vertieres, the decisive battle in Haiti’s war for national liberation. We urge you to share this statement widely.
Along with all of Haiti’s victims, Fanmi Lavalas is waiting for the new government at the crossroad of security.
The population is expecting security and not empty promises.
Too much blood has already been spilled.
Too many people have already died.
Too many families have already been chased out of their homes.
Too many tears have already flowed from the eyes of the Haitian people.
It is not for this that our Ancestors achieved the victory of the Battle of Vertieres on November 18, 1803.
Because our Ancestors genuinely loved Haiti, they sacrificed their lives to liberate us from the system of slavery. Unfortunately, the insecurity and violence of today is the offspring of the same system of slavery.
To continue this struggle for liberation, it is imperative that all patriots, not the “pocketbook” patriots, come together. After the failure of the first transitional government, this new government must clearly demonstrate that they are not pocketbook patriots who have come to bathe in corruption, but that they are patriots who genuinely stand against the violence of the programmed insecurity as well as the food insecurity.
On November 18, 1803, for the flag of victory to be raised in Vertieres, our great-grandparents put the interests of country before power.
Once again today, to accomplish the tasks of returning all the victims to their homes and establishing security to organize free and fair elections, we must put country before power.
Together, for all of us who have this patriotic blood in our veins, Fanmi Lavalas stands with you so that life can blossom again everywhere in the country.
Alone we are weak, together we are strong, all together WE ARE LAVALAS.
